To those of you who weren’t aware, I have a weekly charts page that I call The Top 20 Singles and Tracks. I’ve been doing this since 1990, when the very first #1 single on my Top 20 chart was Release Me by Wilson Phillips. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, now that 2006 is about to come to an end, I’d tabulated the year-end charts, similar to what Billboard Magazine does. Points are awarded per weekly position and number of weeks on the chart.

A total of 106 songs entered the Top 20 Singles and Tracks this year. This year, the Single of the Year award goes to Happy, the debut single from Gotee debut recording artist Ayiesha Woods. The Artist of the Year – a surprise to me, believe it or not – is Avalon.

Complete year-end positions after the jump, along with Top 10 commentary.

THE TOP 20 SINGLES AND TRACKS OF 2006

1. Happy. Ayiesha Woods. 601 points.
2. Orphans of God. Avalon. 595 points.
3. Our God Reigns. Brandon Heath. 585 points.
4. Son of God. Starfield. 547 points.
5. My Wish. Rascal Flatts. 525 points.
6. Find Your Wings. Mark Harris. 517 points.
7. My Savior My God. Aaron Shust. 503 points.
8. Hear My Worship. Jaime Jamgochian. 466 points.
9. Say Goodbye. Jordan Knight & Deborah Gibson. 456 points.
10. Broken & Beautiful. Mark Schultz. 441 points.

Ayiesha Woods’ debut single, Happy, is the #1 single this year on the Top 20 Singles and Tracks. This summery single made its debut on April 15 and topped the chart two separate times during its 22-week chart life, good for third-longest this year, second only to Aaron Shust’s My Savior My God and tied with Avalon’s Orphans of God and Mark Harris’ Find Your Wings. Woods is the first Afro-American to top the year-end survey since Mary Mary did it with Shackles (Praise You) in 2001.

Avalon’s Orphans of God places second overall, a lofty accomplishment considering the song never topped the chart. It is one of three songs in the Top 10 to not have gone to #1 (the other two being Shust’s My Savior My God and Jordan Knight’s single with Deborah Gibson, Say Goodbye). With two songs in the top 12, Avalon is the runaway Artist of the Year.
